THE ASCLEPION
3km from Kos Town. The most important monument on the island is the Asklepion. It became famous in ancient Greece thanks to the skill and wisdom of its Asklepiads (doctors) and in particular of the most eminent of them all, Hippocrates.
Hippocrates (460 BC – ca. 370 BC), born in Kos, was an ancient Greek physician. He is referred to as the ”Father of Modern Medicine” in recognition of his lasting contributions to the field as the founder of the Hippocratic School of medicine which lead to the establishment of medicine as a profession The Hippocratic Oath (orkos) is the oath taken by doctors and other medical professionals swearing to practice medicine ethically.
