In a city shaped by sea, history and hospitality, Grecotel Filoxenia Kalamata has a story of its own.
Grecotel Filoxenia Kalamata stands today as one of the city’s most emblematic hotels, a historic beachfront retreat on the shores of the Messinian Gulf, framed by the endless blue of the sea and the majestic silhouette of Mount Taygetus.
Fully renewed for 2026, the hotel welcomes a new era for hospitality in Kalamata: contemporary, elegant and deeply connected to the land that surrounds it. With 162 rooms and suites, luminous interiors, olive and palm gardens flowing towards the beach, serene pools and the signature warmth of Grecotel service, Filoxenia Kalamata celebrates the timeless Greek art of hospitality in one of the Peloponnese’s most authentic destinations.

Its present pays tribute to a meaningful past, carrying forward the spirit of a hotel that has long been part of Kalamata’s story.
Before it became the Filoxenia known today, the site held a special place in the life of the city. The land belonged to the Valasis family, well known in Kalamata for their contribution to the world of entertainment. Here, before the hotel was created, stood the beloved open-air “Cinema of Valasis”, a landmark of summer evenings by the sea.
In the mid-1970s, the decision was made to transform the property into a new hospitality destination. At the same location, there already stood the old “Xenia” hotel of Kalamata, a small state-owned unit of the Greek National Tourism Organisation with just 44 beds.

Between 1975 and 1982, the original Xenia was radically expanded and reimagined into a larger resort of 600 beds. The project was designed by architects Yannis Koukis and Angelos Altsitzoglou, who gave the hotel its distinctive composition of scattered buildings, tiled roofs and a resort character that opened naturally towards the sea.

From Xenia to Filoxenia, the name itself carried a deeper meaning. More than a hotel, it became an expression of one of Greece’s most enduring values: the generous welcome of the guest.
Grecotel, the leading hospitality Group in Greece, later assumed the responsibility of bringing Filoxenia into its collection of hotels and resorts, preserving its importance as a landmark of Kalamata while gradually shaping it into a contemporary seaside retreat. With its latest renovation, Grecotel Filoxenia Kalamata now reclaims its place among the city’s most distinctive hotels: refreshed, elegant and ready for a new chapter.
The renewed rooms and suites reflect a bright Mediterranean sensibility, with carefully selected materials, understated luxury, contemporary comfort and private terraces or balconies overlooking the Messinian Gulf, the gardens or Mount Taygetus.
Life at Filoxenia unfolds between sea and garden. Guests move from the golden beachfront to the swimming pools, from sunlit verandas to quiet corners shaded by palms and olive trees. The atmosphere is relaxed yet refined, shaped by the beauty of the landscape and the ease of true resort living.

Across its restaurants, bars and curated boutique, the hotel honours the rich culinary heritage of the region. Kalamata olives, extra virgin olive oil, figs and selected products from Messinia and the Peloponnese become part of the guest experience, celebrating the flavours, traditions and generosity of the land.
Beyond the resort, Messinia opens like a living journey through history, nature and culture. Kalamata’s neoclassical charm, vibrant seafront, authentic cuisine and lively rhythm are only moments away. Ancient Messini, the Byzantine towns of Methoni and Koroni, the villages and gorges of Mount Taygetus, and the raw beauty of the Mani peninsula invite guests to discover a region of rare character.

Grecotel Filoxenia Kalamata is more than a beachfront hotel. It is a place where the memory of Kalamata meets the spirit of modern Greek hospitality; where families return, new stories begin, and guests are welcomed not simply as visitors, but as friends.
