HAPPENINGS AT GRECOTEL FILOXENIA KALAMATA
Something is always in motion at Filoxenia. From cinematic moments unfolding across Messinia to art, music and celebrations filling its days and nights, the hotel sits at the centre of a region very much alive, where guests are invited to be part of the story, not just witness it.
THE ODYSSEY
The Independent called it the “new holiday hotspot” for its untamed natural beauty and ancient history, which inspired Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster new movie The Odyssey. Filoxenia Kalamata in the heart of Messinia lets you enter this mythical story, as all the film sets are within an hour’s distance of the hotel.
MEDEA
This August, Euripides’ timeless tragedy Medea takes the stage across the Peloponnese, directed by Nikita Milivojević and starring Karyofyllia Karabeti. A powerful tale of love, betrayal and human extremity, performed at Kalamata’s Open Air Theatre on August 3rd and Ancient Olympia on August 4th.
KALAMATA DANCE FESTIVAL
From 17 to 26 July, Kalamata hosted the 32nd Kalamata International Dance Festival, and brought renowned contemporary dance companies from across the globe to the city. The programme explored themes of resilience and transformation through movement. Grecotel was a proud sponsor of the festival, once again standing behind a celebration of culture deeply woven into the life of Kalamata.
VICTORIA KARELIA MUSEUM OF GREEK COSTUMES
A short drive from Filoxenia, the museum houses the Victoria G. Karelias Collection, presenting complete traditional outfits from across Greece, gold-embroidered overcoats and fine jewellery. Open Tuesday to Saturday, 09.00 – 14.00, with evening hours Wednesday and Saturday, 17.30 –20.30, and Sunday mornings 10.00 – 14.00. Closed Mondays.
ART
The art collection at Filoxenia Kalamata brings together Greek and international works from different periods and disciplines. Among its highlights is La Cigale, painted after Jules Lefebvre, alongside works by Panayiotis Tetsis, Yannis Psychopedis and Yannis Michailidis, alongside European painting, ceramics and twentieth-century design selected for the hotel’s renewed interiors.
ENTERTAINMENT
As the sun sets, Filoxenia comes alive with a rotating calendar of themed music nights, each one setting a different mood and atmosphere. From live sets to curated soundtracks, evenings unfold with rhythm and colour, turning the hotel into a stage of its own each week. Ask our team what’s happening this week — there’s always something new on the calendar.
