IDEAL STARTING POINT FOR DISCOVERING CLASSICAL GREECE The Peloponnese is situated in the south-west part of Greece ; it is surrounded in the east by the Aegean Sea and in the west by the Ionian Sea. ANCIENT OLYMPIA The sanctuary of Olympia spreads around the green wooded feet of the Kronion hill, where the rivers Alpheios and Cladeos meet, 66 km south of Kyllini. Ancient Olympia is known as one of the most important sanctuaries of antiquity, dedicated to the father of Olympian gods – Zeus – and as the birthplace of the Olympic games. Excavations at Olympia began in May 1829, with French archaeologists who transferred their findings to the Louvre, where they are still exhibited. When the Greek government was informed of the looting of artefacts, excavations stopped. They started again 45 years later, with German archaeologists this time, and still continue nowadays with the German Institute of Archaeology in Athens, and the Ephorate of Antiquities in Olympia. The games began in 776 B.C. to honour Zeus. KYLLINI Kyllini lies on the west coast of the Peloponnese. It is just 45 minutes from the airport of Araxos and 100 km from the seaport of Patras. Kyllini has long been known for its thermal spa, traditional farming life, superb beaches and easy access to endless historic sites. Ilia is situated in the western part of the Peloponnese and is famous for its important archaeological findings. In addition, scattered mountain villages each one splendid with unique legends and traditions, are to be found everywhere. With its endless fields and fertile soil, it seems the land has been blessed by some ancient spirit.
